Just to echo what Jim already said; the vacuum retard should have nothing to
do with how the car accelerates. It is active only at idle. The only
benefit is a small reduction in HC and CO emissions, at the expense of
increased CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.
If it is making a difference off-idle, it may be connected wrong.
