Compression tests are always done on a none running engine as in the  
engine is not capable of starting. (ignition disabled)

  If you haven'y already, install the starter (and solenoid) and hook  
it up to a battery. Assuming you have a solenoid with a manual push  
button you can easily turn the engine over with that.  Take out the  
plugs to reduce the load on the rod bearings. Run your tests dry and  
then and squirt some oil into the cylinders and do it again. Any  
significant difference between the two tests indicates a problem with  
the rings.
