Pipe threads are sized by the nominal inside diameter of the pipe; while
bolt threads are sized by the nominal outside diameter of the bolt. As a
result, 1/2" pipe threads are actually slightly larger than 3/4" bolt
threads.
But bolt threads are not designed to seal, so pipe threads are appropriate
for this application (especially at the front, where the plug has to not
protrude or it will interfere with the front plate).
