I was thinking that the very early TRs had a zerk on the hub cap and
were to be filled with grease.

Certainly Paul's, mine & most others would only have that screw hole.
I back up the hole with a nut JBWelded inside the cap to grip the pull
screw a better bite.  I use a 2" screw eye with the correct threads
and run it in until it contacts the stub axle, then a couple more
twists (fingers, no wrench) brings the cap off.
