Hmmm, I've been using a ballast-type coil, WITH a ballast on my 700
unit. I wonder if this could be contributing to the very rough idle I've
been plagued with.

AFAIK, all the Crane CD ignitions require a ballast type coil be used
without the ballast.  Certainly my XR3000 does.  The ignition box limits
the
current, so no ballast is needed.
