DOT 3 and 4 doesn't help the paintwork too much, but just as you say, it 
does not cause internal corrosion.  External alloy parts of the brake system 
exposed to air and water will often acquire a powdery white patina.  As long 
as the working/moving parts are not affected, you are probably OK, but a 
rebuild of the seals does no harm.
