Sorry, couldn't resist that. I think the "button" has come adrift from the
valve stem - it should be attached. I am assuming that it was secured with
a brass screw, but I cannot confimr that because I have never taken that
valve apart. My advice would be to replace the valve. The screw (or
whatever was securing it) is probably lodged in the 'eater core.
I am an ex-pat living in the US and getting ready to go home next week for
10 days. Now you have given me the chance to brush up on my cockney!
