A few thoughts...the previous sprocket wore excessively - do you know the 
cause?  If not, how long can you expect the remaining gears to last? Do you 
reckon the failure was simply a fluke?

Also, you cited extensive damage...it seems the cost of new gears would be 
minimal compared to new pistons and heads.  This assumes that suitable 
replacement parts (and not junk) can be sourced...
