Both Ken Gillanders (British Frame and Engine) and Herman van den Akker
(HVDA Enterprises) recommend Valvoline 20W50 "racing" oil. The stuff that
now says "Not street legal" (or something like that). It's low detergent,
but has more ZDDP (which functions as an extreme pressure additive) than
non-detergent motor oil (which is generally also short on other additives).
Best of all, it contains *none* of the additive that can attack "yellow
metal" in the gearbox (which is found in conventional GL4 as well as
conventional GL5 gear oil).

Ken actually tore down a working OD after 5 years on the 20W50 Racing, and
reported that it still looked perfect. I can't offer that kind of
testimonial, but it seems to work well for me, too. The multi-weight
character makes shifting when cold a bit less "agricultural", while it's hot
viscosity is actually higher than 90 weight gear oil (the ratings are done
differently).
