Here's a few thoughts, Tom :
Try threading the plug in without the gasket, just finger-tight, and see if
the gasket surfaces will meet (or at least nearly so). Check all the way
around that the gap is even (if there is a gap) or that there is no gap if
they touch. The later plugs with the slots around the edge are prone to
getting distorted so they don't meet the housing squarely.
Are you certain the leak is actually from the plug, and not running down
from somewhere above ? The joint between the adapter plate and main body
actually passes above the filter housing, and is a common trouble spot. If
you can feel any oil above the level of the drain plug gasket, suspect a
leak higher up.
