I competed the same job on my 60 about a month ago. I will say that I am
highly suspicious of the quality of the repro silent blocs. My steering is
heavier to the right than the left. The car drives OK and is more noticeable
when up on jack stands than on the road. I disassembled the entire unit a
second time all the way down to the steering box, reset the end float on the
worm, checked the steering rod for straightness, Checked that tie rods and
ends
are not binding, checked that both trunnions and verticals were operating
freely, bench operated the steering box from the shaft (not the wheel),
replaced
the idler, bracket and seal with new, reassembled and got the exact same
results. Keep in mind that since the idler points to the rear of the car it
actually loosens when tuned to the right and tightens when turned to the left.
I have concluded that the silentblocs, particularly the one at the idler is
the offender. I am going to live with it for a while and see what happens.
I have very few miles on the job now.
If I were you I would do the same, if you are confident that there is no
danger involved.
