Lossen the two bolts on the motor mounts [not the ones on the engine
directly]. Undo the drive shaft bolts on both ends. Remove the tranny
tunnel. Remove the two nuts on the tranny mount that hold the mount to the
tranny. Put a jack under the tranny and jack it up as high as you can [may
need to manipulate the tranny mount]. This should get the tranny high
enough that the drive shaft can come out below it.
I tried that (last week) and seeing that interior removal would be required,
I elected to take the differential out instead - jacking the rear of the
gearbox all the way up against the tunnel cover, still wouldn't come out - the
degree of success here will be directly proportional to how far you can
collapse the drive shaft - mine's pretty screwed up and wouldn't collapse very
far
- having a lift and a big tall gearbox jack made diff removal easier than
interior removal.
Anyway, here's the reason for the apparent error in workshop manual:
Prior to the 1973 model year the rear gearbox mount was farther forward on
the frame and wasn't in the way - the A-overdrive mounted in the same place as
the non-OD 4 spd - J-overdrive mounts farther back, so rear gearbox mounts
were moved farther back on the frame and non-OD cars have an adapter bracket
between the gear box and the gearbox mounts on the frame which are now in the
way - apparently nobody ever revised the manual after 1972

PS - Ashford - how was the Red/Blue game?
