Sorry, I just have to rise to the bait. Just too many stereotypes here to
ignore!
First of all, NASCAR has its roots in the south, most of the teams are
located in the south, and, for may years, most of its personalities came
from the south, so its really no surprise that there is a strong southern
influence. But, NASCAR is now truly a national sport, the most popular
motor sport in the country, and the "hill billy" image that FFUWNF refers to
is not much more than a stereotype, nowadays. Last year's champion, Jimmie
Johnson, is from California, Kurt Busch (the previous champ) is from Nevada,
and Matt Kenseth (2003) is from Wisconsin. As for the 1950s slapstick, I
really don't know what that refers to. I do know that Mike Joy, one of the
"silly hill billy announcers," owns several MGs and a real Mini Cooper S.
And, I do know that my wife and I will make our annual pilgrimage to Vegas
in March to watch the race.
