Brian,
Congratulations for diving in there!
Wait to hear from the others but I think you might try this technique for
freeing up your cylinder head.
You could try the old rope down the spark plug hole trick. The object of
this game is to fill up two cylinders on opposite ends with enough material
(rope) that the pistons push on the rope which in turn forces the head off
the block by turning the crankshaft.
To play this game you must remove the rocker arm shaft so the valves don't
interfere first. Then stuff a bunch of rope down the spark plug hole when
the piston is at or near the bottom of it's stroke on say number 1 and 4
cylinders. After you have done that, rotate the crankshaft using whatever
means you have. The interference of the rope should break the head free.
Make sure you have all the studs out of the head first as they are probably
the culprit in the first place. Ask me how I know..
Does anybody have any opinions on rebuilding the head and not replacing the
old rings? I have heard that a newly rebuilt head on old piston rings will
blow the rings out in no time. Since he is in there, should he replace the
rings and bearings..?
Valley Forge is full of snow now so you might want to install a set of
bearings and rings too. If you are interested, I have a pretty detailed
engine rebuilding section on my website below.
Good Luck,
Dave Connitt
