Bill,
What a cool place to work...... and talk about a place with creative minds
and bleeding edge technology. However there is a certain irony in your car
contemplations :-) I watched every minute of Black Sky: The Race for Space
on the Discovery Channel which documented the whole development process from
beginning to end. For a super Hi-Tech operation, they were definitely low
tech (yet very creative) in some areas: Wind Tunnel testing was conducted by
strapping a part (Rudder ?) to the roof of a pick up truck and speeding down
the runway! Or how about the orientation instrument in the cockpit....a ping
pong ball on a string to tell the pilot if he was right side up or not! So
I'm thinking you should have a car that's a combination of low and high
tech.....take your TR3, add a navigation system, DVD player and maybe
supercharged fuel injection.....Hmmmm...No? Then I like the Elise or NSX
idea.

Have fun in the new job!

Strange as it seems, I have been contemplating getting a modern car.
Now, before the flamers cry blasphemy, I wish to point out that I have a new
job that is unbelievably cool and the car hobby has to take a back seat for
awhile. By an act of providence, I have become Data Acquisition Systems &
Telemetry engineer for Burt Rutan at Scaled Composites in Mojave. You know,
the guy that launched the first privately funded manned spaceflight. When I
should be thinking about British cars I find myself thinking about work
instead. What a pervert I have become.
Anyway, I have noticed that some cars that I have never considered
before are starting to look better and get into my affordability range.
Specifically the Mercedes 230SLK, the Jaguar XK8, the Porsche Boxster &
Acura NSX. I have been hoping that the Lotus Elise prices would begin
dropping, but that is not the case yet. Some of the Aston Martin DB7's are
getting lower, but not low enough yet.
Anyone else on the list having the same mental tug of war?
