My starter usually works but grinds every so often. I bought a replacement
on Ebay but it was the wrong starter. Since I had mine out, I cleaned it up
and greased the bushings and it bench tested fine. I put it back in but it
still grinds about every fifth to tenth start as before. When I had the
starter out, I checked and no flywheel teeth are missing. I believe that my
problem is that my starter drive teeth are not perfect so may not slide
right in place. None of the starter drive gear teeth are broken but they
are somewhat deformed on their leading edge. I would just replace my
starter drive gear except I am not sure how to remove the cover. Instead of
having the typical screw, it has a pin and is sort of riveted in place. So,
now I am thinking that if I am going to replace the starter, maybe I should
go for one of those gear reduction starters. Is it possible that even
though all my flywheel teeth are in there, that they may have developed a
burr and are less receptive to the drive gear caused by the grinds
(miss-hits) that have happened in the past? I have not had the car long so
don't know how long it has been grinding but it was doing it when I got it.
I don't know if the hardened flywheel teeth would be deformed from the
grinding but I would hate to invest in a new regular or gear reduction
starter and still have the same problem. Should I go in and touch up the
flywheel teeth? Since nothing really looks that bad, could something else
altogether be my problem.
Are these gear reduction starters worth the extra money? Does anyone know a
cheaper than normal source for these? Thanks for any help on this, Jim
