Bob, I guess my question is Why upgrade your ignition?
If you have a working Lucas electronic, why does TBI really change anything?
If there are other motor upgrades ( Higher compression, camshaft, etc.) I
guess so, I really don't know how to tell.
If you're looking for higher spark voltage, seems most any High Performance
( hi voltage, hi output, etc.) coil should do. Accel, Malory, Crane all come
to mind. I'm sure MSD is good too. I actually like what I call Bosch Blue. I
use them allot in old cars and motorcycles with zero problems.
I think if you stay with stock ( 25 thousandths ?) plug gap your dist. cap
and rotor may be fine. But if you increase plug gap ( 45 thousands?) which I
thought was the whole point, you will definitely be running much higher
voltages through the cap and rotor. As Randall said, you may have to upgrade
the distributor.
As far as the "ballast resister" goes, I'm kind of Old School, but I thought
it was there to limit the current (voltage?) through the ignition system
when the key was in the on position. This lengthened the life of the breaker
points. When electronic ignition ( no points) came in, the ballast resister
was done away with.
And Bob, great website you have, I've gotten allot of good info there over
the years!
Eric.
