When you pay the extra $$ for the Hella, Cibie & IPF lamps you are
paying for a more precision lens that is carefully aligned with the
reflector and where the filaments would be located.
As Dave mentioned any halogen will be noticeably better than the old
style bulbs and they are cheap these days. But if you do drive much at
night in places where you need every bit of light you can get for
safety, it would not hurt to pay the extra for the name brand lamps with
the superior European lens design. If it is just occasional night
driving, cheap chain store lamps should do fine.
