I've recently found the term "Final Drive" used in both OE literature and
conversation to mean the rear end ratio only. I've always considered the "final
drive" ratio to mean a function of the top transmission gear and the rear
axle ratio. Thus the "final drive" could be used to compare a given
transmission married to different rear axles. An overdrive transmission with a
5th gear
ratio of 0.72 married to a 4.27 axle would be a 3.07 "final drive". The
"final drive" on a 4-speed with a direct drive and a 3.15 axle would be 3.15.
Any input on this?
Thanks
Steve
