This gets brought up on a regular basis and while I don't think there is a
right choice - other than the best sound is the exhaust contingent, I'll
tell you what I did.
I went with an Alpine head unit, added a good amp, and placed component
speakers both in the kidney panel and installed tweeters in the vent holes -
I don't have A/C and they really don't have a need for them.
The resulting sound was ok. The separate tweeter location turned out nicely
since high notes are very directional, but the bass was still lacking. I
fixed that by buying a set of decent 6x9 speakers and put them in a box on
the rear shelf. The improvement was substantial, and they can always be
removed if space is at a premium.
