When I was im auto tech in college a friend had constructed a dianostic 
guage.  He had mounted eight led light bulb in a flat piece of metal and 
mounted it under his dash.  Each of the light had a pick up at one of 
his spark plugs.  When the engine was running the dorresponding led 
light would illuminate each time the cylinder fired.
