List,
Ive only had my engine running for about 2-3 months and total run time is
only 1.5 hrs. (guessing). Thus far, Ive only used water as a coolant
because of the need for frequent radiator drainings. Ive noticed that the
first second or so of draining at radiator tap or engine drain tap produced
rust colored water which quickly turned clear. Foolishly (perhaps), I would
dismiss this. The engine tap shouldnt have done this because during the
rebuild, the engine shop tanked it clean. Right? Only the radiator is
dirty inside, I guess (but it too has been oked).
After reading another manual tonight which spoke about the
rusting tendency of steel figure-of-eight gaskets (which I have). Now Im
worried that I might have done damage prior to ever even getting my car off
the jack stands. Am I overreacting? If I drained the coolant at both taps
does this drain the f-o-8 gasket get drained? If I use a 50/50 mix of
water/antifreeze does the protect it? I live in Georgia.
Thanks, Paul Dorseyt
