Randall,
I bought some relatively cheap ($15) ignition wires from Autozone to use as
emergency back-up (bumble-bee wires are on my TR3).
Because the Duralast brand wires from Autozone contained an extra wire, I
dissected it. Below the black rubberish 1/16 outercovering was a white
plastic(?) that made up most of the diameter, but for a 1/16 black strand
in the center. Opening this strand revealed white plastic hairs or fibers.
Nothing seemed metal. Although these were tiny, I imagined that they were
the conductor, surrounded by 2 black layers and one white layer of
insulation. Is this correct?
Of course, this type wire would be unsuitable for our Triumph
distributor caps as trying to hit the conductor wire with our type
screw/cap would be problematic. However, the brass ends would work for
regular distributor caps.
While I was at AutoZone I looked at their batteries. They had a Group 49
size battery which is a tighter fit (and 20$ cheaper) for the TR3. Its
13.25 length battery would better fill my 14 battery box, however, it is
1 shorter in height than the Group 27 battery. This might yield greater
distance from the bonnet, I thought. I think it carried the same amp
output- Im not sure. Although probably not original, I think I want to
have my batterys terminals both furtherest away from the firewall, this Grp
49 battery would also put the + terminal on the left which would work out
best in my + grnd. Car.
After arriving home I measured my battery box again, and I will
say that the TRF replacement boxs backside does get tilted even further
away from the prospective battery at 8 in height (which is the group 27s
height). I think the salesman said the Group 49 battery fit German Cars.
But is just might fit my wallet better when the time comes.
