I have been researching the strange activity of my alternator in my 1972 TR6.
It seems to have a Delco-Remy (labelled Made in England) alternator. I came
across the following text in the Triumphclub.org website:
"For example, for a short period in 1972 which my car happens to fall in,
Triumph fitted Delco-Remy alternators in place of the standard Lucas
units...maybe Lucas was on strike, I don't know. The wiring for these units is
slightly different to the Lucas ones, and it's not covered in any manual I've
ever seen."
So my thought that somebody had switched the alternator for a North American
aftermarket unit seems to be untrue. I'll have a shot at getting it rebuilt
tomorrow at a standard shop as suggested by the list. I had that done in 1988
or so and it's lasted until today. Now it's doing weird things like suddenly
jumping to 16+volts until I turn off the car and restart. Even when it's
working normally the ammeter is very twitchy. Then it will hold for a while
before jumping again. It seems to get stuck that way once warmed up.
More fun and games in the land o' Lucas, except in this case I am still unsure
whether it's a wiring harness issue or the alternator itself. Oh well, I will
benefit from a rebuild in any case.
