I am in the UK for a few years and am collecting the
odd bit for my TR back home now gathering dust in a
Wisconsin barn. I recently purchased a used gearbox
from a TR specialist, they removed it from a car, sold
it to me with no warranty and charged me VAT. Is it
customary to pay VAT on used parts? The only value
added was removing it from the dead car.
I wouldn't question their integrity but they told me
over the phone the had several hardtops at 100 GBP
each but on arriving they ranged from 100 (mostly
dents and rust) to 250 for useable so I'm guesing they
figure I might be a rich American (they couldn't be
more wrong!) who might not know about things VAT.
