I think my brain is fired, literally, from picking a 90+ degree day to work
over a hot engine so please bear with me. When I stand on the distributor
side of the car with the engine turned off and look at the timing marks, the
BTDC marks are above the 0 mark and the ATDC are below it... Correct?

       8
       -
       4 BTDC
       -
       0
       -
       4 ATDC
       -
       8

If so, at idle I'm on the 4 degree ATDC mark which then advances/increases
as I increase RPMs. So now I want to find the optimum timing for my car.
Haynes says "distributor can be moved about 1/4 of a division at a time
until the best setting is obtained". So what's a 1/4 of a division? And I
assume they want you to advance it. I'm thinking of increasing the advance
by 2 degrees at a time until there's some pinging? Maybe start at 6 degrees
and see what happens. If I hear pinging, retard it a degree?

Thanks as always
