Randall, you are very correct. I have both a 3A and a 4A. The 4A lever is
really tall, even with the rear tilt. So much so that when shifting into
1st, one has to be careful not to pinch one's fingers between the gearshift
knob and the steering wheel. Because I am tall (6-3), my knees kept making
contact with the steering wheel. So I put on a 15" NOS Triumph optional
woodrim wheel, plus adjusted the wheel all the way back, "NASCAR" style. Now
my knees don't hit, and my fingers don't get pinched. I like how in the
TR3, when shifting into 1st, your hand has to travel under the dash.
Actually, I think the dash is further back in a 3 than the 4/4A, which gives
the 3 a sense of having much more legroom. Despite the fact that the TR4/4A
is supposed to be roomier than the 3...I find that I fit the 3 much better.
I think MR. Michelotti must not be very tall...
While I'm at it, I'll comment that I feel that the TR3 non-synchro gearbox
is much smoother than the synchro one in the 4A, which has a much more
notchy feel. Might be just specific to these particular gearbox examples.
