Packing the dust cap is an old-timers trick for greasing the wheel bearings. The idea is that the grease will be drawn into the bearing from the cap. Used it once on my VW bug when I heard a little bearing noise, but was where I couldn't pack the bearing. Filled the dust cap, pounded it back on, and in short order the noise was gone.
