parts, Unfortunately they were in the US and I in the UK, still the thought
was kind.

The drive shaft guy probably thought he was doing you a favor and to some
extent, he was telling the truth. The reality is that most of the time a CV
type shaft cannot be directly replaced with a regular standard type
u-joint. It could physically be made to fit, and would work per-say but
would vibrate too severely, be WAY overloaded, and fail within a short time
(probably taking a few other things with it) - However, the Spitfire
driveshaft isn't really one of those applications where a CV joint is
needed- so not ot worry, older Spitfires live happily with the old standard
joints in them!
