I had a very similar experience with my TR4.
Starter would grind very slowly. Put the biggest battery I could find in
it, no help.
Turns out one of the brush holders in the starter had broken (not the
spring, the holder), and it was running at much reduced power. With the
engine turning well without the plugs I would suspect a similar issue (worn
brushes, burn commutator, etc).
