Hog Island on the Delaware accross from Philadelphia was likely the worlds
largest shipyard around WW1 with massive ship building and construction.
So, the fellows who took the ferry to the island brought extra large
sandwiches along as it was inconvenient to go back accross the river for
more food. So, one thing led to another and the word "Hoagies" came to
pass. I'm not sure how the other large tubular sandwiches came to be...i.e.
"torpedo" or "Hero's" or "submarines". But, the local Philadelphia variety
is the Hoagy.
