The earlier TR2-3A did have a very slightly larger diameter ring gear than the
later engines did, but the tooth spacing was the same AFAIK.  I don't know what
your mystery flywheel is from, so I can't say how well it would work on your TR.
Spacing front/rear is also important and perhaps it's different; plus of course
you would need a clutch to fit it.  I'm also having a hard time understanding
why you are "looking for trouble".

However, it's not hard to use the earlier TR2-3A flywheel on a later TR3A-4A
engine, all you have to do is use the matching clutch and starter.  The early
starter sticks out more though, so it will interfere with most aftermarket
headers, or the stock TR4A exhaust system.  An alternative to this problem is to
use one of the gear-drive replacement starters (to match the flywheel of
course).
