Hi Steven,
Optima batteries are only available in a very limited number of sizes and
they designate them differently from the common "group" codes. You want the
equivalent of a Group 24, Optima "Red Top" for your car. I don't know the
Optima designation (without going out and lifting the hood on my Land Rover).
Optima (Optimi?) are great. They charge very easily and hold the juice
well. Also, they are sealed so there is little concern of acid leaks. I've
never
seen any "fluff" form around the posts on several I've owned, either. I did
wear out an Optima, after 6 years in my Land Rover, which is loaded with
electrical stuff and has a 100 amp alternator, so is probably pretty hard on
batteries (the original Lucas battery only survived 2 years).
My one gripes are that Optima doesn't come in smaller sizes I'd like to be
able to use, and they are darned heavy. Be sure your battery retainer is up
to snuff, along with the brackets on the firewall of the car.
The only reason my TR4 won't be getting an Optima is I'll be using a
smaller (Group 54?) mounted in a sealed box behind the passenger's seat,
instead of
the engine compartment. Optima doesn't make anything that small and there
isn't room to fit a large battery.
There are some other manufacturers making similar batteries now, sometimes
a little cheaper and in some additional sizes. No experience with any of
them, I can only guess they must be similar in performance.
  Cheers!

Is there an Optima battery that would work, or a reason why I wouldn't
want an Optima?
