An old Rabbit diesel would provide an authentic smokey experience, but
better would be the new VW diesel, quiet and clean with 50mpg. I'll have
to measure one at the dealer one of these days. The 4-cyl TDI 1.9 turbo
is a TR-appropriate 100hp with plenty of low-range torque -- but it
probably won't sound right no matter what you do. And I'm not sure if I
could adjust to the classic car smell of leather and french fries.
