I took the generator apart and discovered that the problem was the rear
bushing had worn too much so the armature was riding askew and allowing the
blades on the pulley to hit the face plate causing the clicking noise. I
took the generator down to a local rebuilder who pressed in a new bushing.
So it looks like I will put off the alternator conversion for a while, but I
did ask them at the rebuilders about parts. To Randall's question about a
smaller diameter alternator, they recommended the Nippondenso which they
said was about the same size as the TR3 Lucas generator. It's more
expensive, but they have rebuilt ones for $125 which isn't too bad. New ones
are about twice that. They may also be able to source the 3/4" pulley. There
are probably local rebuildes around the country that have similar deals, but
if anyone is interested, they will ship. Let me know if anyone wants contact
information.
