Hi Oliver,
I think you are referring to replacing the rubber flex joint "donuts" in
the steering shaft,
right? It's a fairly easy job. The main things to remember are that there are
a couple
braided ground wires to replace at the same time, passing through the donuts
and
serving the horn, and the longer bolts all need to be safety wired in place.
As to the movement of the steering column inside the cockpit, there are a
couple
possibilities. First, if everything is loosened under the dash, the column
can be slid upwards
to make easier removing one or both of the flex joints in the steering shaft.
Second, there is
an adjustment right above the upper flex joint, where the upper column length
can be fiddled
a little to move the steering wheel in and out to a more preferred position.
Hope this helps!

I had taken a look at the steering couplings and they needed to be replaced.
What is throwing me though is it appears as though the the steering coloumn
has moved outward into the passanger compartment by more than the thickness
of the flexible coupling (1.25") . I have checked to see if the wheel was
loose and it is not. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be the culprit
and has anyone else seen this occur. The thing that is odd is that I am sure
it was not like this when I parked it 13 years ago. It does not appear loose
and am not sure where I will get the movement to set it back in position.
