Sounds like you may have switched to negative ground. Swapping the ammeter
leads is required after this in order to maintain the proper indication. One
more test you can try is turn on the lights with the engine off. The ammeter
should read a discharge. If ti reads a charge then, indeed, the ammeter
connections need to be switched.
It's that simple.
