Did you use your old distributor with this engine, or did the new one come
with a new distributor? If the distributor was changed with the engine
(i.e., was not your old distributor), did you check for free movement of the
distributor points plate? It may be that the distributor is not advancing
the timing correctly. The fact that the engine is running hot may be a clue
to this.
Regarding the carbs, you said that the new front carb was "spewing fuel"
when compared with the rear carb. You should check the needle valve in this
carb to make sure it is sealing. After you get the mixture set correctly,
be sure to balance the carbs. Oh, and make sure there is oil in the
dashpots.
