It wasn't for bearings, it was for the seal. Whether it's still required, I
couldn't say. But I'd probably do it anyway, just because.
OTOH, the worst that happens is that the seal leaks a bit at first, no big deal
unless the water flushes enough lubricant out of the rear bearing to shorten
it's life. Otherwise, it will just run out of the weep hole harmlessly.
