Well just when I thought everything that could go wrong ... already
had ... Casper (1957 TR3) threw another one at me ...
When the vacuum line broke off of the Carb, it seems to have fallen
down and shorted the large Generator post, causing the ammeter to
swing wildly in both directions ... then when I shut the engine off
the "dreaded red light" came on ... after tying up the loose vacuum
line and banging on the regulator the light went off.
I replaced the vacuum line ... went for a drive and everything was
fine for a while, then the ammeter started its swinging again, but
eventually settled down. When I got home and switched off the
ignition the red light came on ... again ... I was checking the
plugs, small and large on the generator and the large one seemed to
be a little loose, so I used a long screwdriver to tap it home
(avoiding the hot header which had burned me earlier). There was a
zap spark, and when I checked the red light had gone off!!!
Now MY theory is this ... the loose vacuum line bounced off the large
plug and somehow re-polarized the generator ... or at least confused
it ... and my "zap spark" has somehow "un-confused" it. So I will
be really interested in the replies I get ... Ahh the wonderful world
of Lucas ...
