Jim, Getting the bearing shell out is a tough job and you are on the right
track. Using the Dremmel will work but be careful to not nick the ID of the
laygear surface as you want to maintain that tight fit when you replace the
bearing with your new ones. I have been able to score and then crush the
bearing shell on occasion after making a slot with a Dremmel or small
grinder. Just be patient and you'll get it out.
Installation of the layshaft is the same as the removal but in reverse. You
do not install the layshaft before you install the mainshaft other than to
get all of the pieces in line. Once you have the laygear and thrust washers
in place pull the layshaft out and allow the laygear to drop to the bottom
of the case. Then install the mainshaft assembly and the input shaft
assembly and cover. Once that's all in place then turn the gearbox over and
allow the laygear to drop into place on the mainshaft and install the
layshaft through the laygear and the thrust washers.Be sure the thrust
washer tabs fall into their slots. Some grease at the initial assembly and
fitting as above, helps keep them in line.
Be sure to install the 3rd / 4th syncro hub along with the brass syncro cup
onto the mainshaft before you install the mainshaft into the gearbox. It
will not fit over the layshaft gear later.
