Hi Jack,
This is often a symptom of a failed condenser, the points run hotter and the
heel (plastic on currently available points) melts and is quickly worn away.

As far as I am aware all of what's currently available originates from the
same manufacturer in the UK. They are sold under Lucas, Intermotor, County
and CI brands, and doubtless others. As you know, older products had a fibre
heel which does not melt, so this symptom of a failed condenser wouldn't be
apparent.
