as I owned the cars. They were set up so that they disengaged if you

I almost answered with this same response. I installed mine on an 83 Mazda.
I had one installed by the dealer, an aftermarket unit, on my F150 Ford PU.
It worked fine about 5 years, but has since stopped. Of course it's out of
warrantee now.
