Doug, Alan,

I back what Alan described here, when I put the '3a front suspension
back together, all of the external compressor were not "made" for the
small spaces. So off to the hardware store and got a 3/4" threaded rod
with the nuts and large washers. At first tried a 2x4 and drilled a
hole through it, of course not wanting to mar the newly painted
suspension :-P

As I tightened down, as expect it started to creak and groan, after some
more turns, BANG!!! The 2x4 split, luckily nothing really let go but it
did scare the living daylights out of me. The next day, picked up 2 6"
pieces of box pipe and drilled it, overkill but it was free. The next
time I think I like Alan's suggestion of the anchor plates :-)
