In the course of the restoration I have the removed the differential.
My original plan was to simply inspect it, clean it up, repaint it, and
put it back on.
Although the movement seems within tolerances and there is no unwanted
noises, indicating mechanical soundness, it appears that the front seal
has a slow leak.
By "appears" I mean that if I take the diff, and set it up on its front
end (balancing it on the wide flange), that oil pools up over time.
That indicates its a slow leak, but a leak all the same. So, my first
question is, is this a big enough leak where I need to replace the front
oil seal, or is there a degree of this just being how it is? In other
words, is this acceptable to some degree? After all, I do have the
thing standing up on its end, which is not the natural position.
If I need to replace the seal, do I have to remove the differential unit
from the case to get to it, or can I do this from the outside directly?
If I need to remove the unit, do I need the tool that "spreads" the
case, or is there another way?
If I need the tool for the case, then does anyone know an experienced
mechanic for TR diffs in the Dallas/Fort Worth area? Because this would
exceed my capabilities.
