A consideration when using a cold front is the possible uneven loading of the 
fan.  If half of the rad is covered the fan blade will see air then no air, 
this will cause the fan blades to bend back and forth eventually causing it to 
crack.  

While flex fans exist to reduce engine load, the flex cycle only occurs as 
the engine speed increases rather than flexing every revolution.

A proper cold front will have a hole on the center of the cover to allow 
cooling if needed.  Even better is a shutter system found on some large trucks 
( 
or even the 1953 era military generators I have.
