Please note that often the problem is not the mail reader, but the mail sender.
Outlook and Outlook
Express, for example, by default break and wrap lines at 76 characters if mail
is configured to be sent as
plain text. This is often shorter than a URL address, and trumps encasing the
URL in <> characters. This
value can be changed in Outlook by going to Tools>Options and then clicking the
"Send" tab. Then click on
"Plain Text Settings" and you can up the wrap point higher than 76.

You are correct, internet standards conforming mail reader programs will
not break links enclosed in greater-than / less-than symbols.
