If you think you will ever weld thin stuff like the sheet metal our cars
are made of, by all means get a gas welder. With a small size machine you
can weld body panels, and by using a 'weave' pattern in your beads, you can
weld iron stuff up to 1/4". In addition, core welders all leave slag on the
outside of the bead. This must be 100% cleaned off prior to any painting or
it will pop off later. Gas welders, on the other hand, do not leave slag on
the weld. If adjusted properly, gas welders also leave virtually no spatter.
