Well....I wasn't getting very far with the dashboard flasher so I decided to
take a look at my left rear taillight. A friend had mentioned that it wasn't
working and I had filed the thought away for a week or so. Sure enough, the
bulb was burnt out. I replaced it and guess what?? The dashboard flasher now
works fine! The Dan Masters article sent by John may give a hint on this but
can't really say where. Why would a tail/brake light failure cause the
flasher indicator to not work seems strange to me.

No, 171-300 would work just fine. The difference I am talking about is
internal to the flasher, and does not show on the outside. Lots of cars
have had the spade terminals added to the wires, because the screw-type
flashers were hard to find for awhile.
Even today, you can find a flasher in most parts stores that looks right,
but will not drive the dash indicator properly. Since I am by no means a
purist, I rewired TS39781LO to use the commonly available flasher. The
change was simply to move the ground wire from the indicator bulb, to a
source of switched 12v.
