The old tried and true thing was called "Cosmoline". It would be
painted onto the parts and solidify to form a coating around the parts
ans was easy to remove when the parts were needed. I don't know if it
is still available but it is worth the effort to check.

Subject: Gear preservative?
I have the internals of a transmission which I hope I will never need
i.e. I am
keeping them as insurance, and I want to store them long term.
I found some Model A parts a while back that were wrapped in something
like
oily burlap. It sort of worked (well I guess 70+ years is a long time)
but
there were a few spots that had some surface rust. So I'm looking for
ideas on
some kind of stuff to coat these things with and then pack them away.
I am hoping to find something a bit waxy that won't make as much of a
mess as
oil or grease, and then I may build a wooden box for them since they are
so
heavy.
Thanks,
Jim
